I understand religion gives people comfort. I understand some great things have been done under the banner of religion. However, the majority of the social impacts of religion are negative. Religion has caused some of the worst, bloodiest wars in human history. Religion is the root cause of most of the world's violations of human rights. Religion is what is putting a roadblock in the way of many of the world's most incredible scientific research. Organized religion is a virus, a plague on mankind. What you find that is when a population becomes more intelligent, better educated, and more rational, less and less of the populace buys into religious teaching and their society is just fine. Look at the majority of Western Europe. Their cultures have almost minimalized religion to a side-show for the wacko's, and they have standards of living that even we, as Americans, admire.
Even though religion brings some good to this world, the net result of religion has been death and pain for humanity. ALL of the positive effects of religion can be achieved without religion existing, and we can remove all of the downsides of religion. Sure, if you want, you can continue believing in private, go crazy. Just don't let it affect ANYONE, which includes taking your children to church before they are old enough to make a rational decision, and don't let religion influence you when it comes to things like voting, public discourse, etc.
